Dead of Winter: A Crossroads Game
Zombies, zombies everywhere!,
With the never-ending popularity of zombies, it would be easy to dismiss a zombie game as merely capitalising on the trend. However, Dead of Winter has more than enough to justify its purchase.

My fiancé (K) and I have been playing this game for a few months now. We initially loved the design and artwork of the game and found the mechanics fairly easy to pick up after one or two play-throughs of the simpler scenarios. Once you have got to grips with the statistics and special abilities of your characters, you are good to go! I have even been able to introduce this game to my young sons (5 and 7) and they have been able to follow the rules and mechanics without the need to simplify things too much (although I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to young audiences!).

We've played this game in groups from 2 up to 7 or 8 (with some playing in pairs), and have found the game works well with up to four people. Playing in pairs does limit you to not being able to play the 'betrayal' role as much as you can in larger groups. But with the scenarios and crossroads events, we have not felt that we have missed much without the betrayal roles and the replay-ability is very high.

While, as I said above, the artwork is good, K and I would have liked to see more variety in the zombie design - there are only 3 types of zombie which seems a shame. The game uses cardboard standees, and in a perfect world they would have been plastic, but this is not a massive issue - it's just a personal preference.

Overall, I can't imagine getting bored of this game any time soon, and with the 'Long Night' expansion on my to buy list I'm very much looking forward to adding to my zombie family. If you're a person who enjoys collaborative games with elements of combat and resource management as well as some deceit, this game is for you!
