Podręcznik do drugiej edycji Star Trek Adventures jest podstawowym opisem mechaniki, opartej na systemie 2d20 od Modiphiusa. Po siedmiu latach rozwijania STA twórcy uznali, że nadszedł czas na przebudowanie systemu.
Celem drugiej edycji było odświeżenie i wyklarowanie zasad gry, zwiększenie płynności rozgrywki i lepsze - bardziej zrozumiałe - ich opisanie oraz prezentowanie. Do tego wszystko miało zachować kompatybilność wsteczną na poziomie około 90%.
